Been going back and forth on whether to get an ISBN for my book or just rely on the free one Amazon assigns through KDP. From what I understand, a free ISBN ties the book to that specific platform, while buying your own lets you publish across multiple retailers under the same identity.
Looking into a few publishing services to sort this out, including Authors Dream, since it seems like the kind of detail that's easy to get wrong and hard to fix later once a book is live.
For anyone who has self-published before, did you buy your own ISBN or use the free one? Curious if it actually made a difference for you in terms of distribution or looking more "professional" to readers.
