If your app doesn't support Split View, then split screen on Macbook will not work. Also, "Displays have separate Spaces" must be enabled in Mission Control settings. Rebooting the app or updating macOS might be the solution to the problem. Also, don't just click the green button quickly, but hover over it instead.
